Well 1-2 is better than 0-3, I honestly didn't expect Iowa to beat St.Johns as they are a contender each year in the Big East it seems. However, I was hopeful we would be able to beat Illinois.
Pitching
-I would give it a B- for the weekend, despite the St.Johns meltdown Iowa pitched solid all weekend for the most part. If Kenyon and Robertson do not have what it takes...I have no problem with them throwing Erdman & Turnbull out there (by the way Turnbull threw 1 inning, no action from Erdman), I think we have to use those two because they are quality experienced guys.
Defense
-I would also give our defense a B-, they did play well most of the weekend except for an inning against Illinois. If they can continue with error free or even one error baseball, we will be in good shape.
Offense
-I would give our offense a D, we didn't hit very well for the majority of the weekend. Guys like Freie, McCool, Toole, & Cataldo did show flashes of what they can do which is a good thing.
I don't know if it was the fact that Iowa hasn't been outside much this year that led to some of this early season problems in the first few games or what. I am hopeful now that they have their first win under their belt they will improve. If we can keep the solid pitching around (minus 2 innings against SJU), I think Iowa will be in good shape if their offense can improve.
